Final Examination: RST 225--Spring 1998--Patrick Lynch, S.J.

Please answer the following questions:

1. Study two or three sections from Welfare Reform: A Twentieth Century Fund Guide to the Issues (New York: Twentieth Century Fund Press, 1995), e.g., "Are Welfare Families Getting Too Much?" Should Immigrants Receive Welfare?" and "What Is the State's Role in Welfare?" Then develop a Christian response to the issues of welfare reform by using information learned in this course about (distributive) justice and the principles of economic life. (60 points--2-3 pages typed, double-spaced with 10 or 12 point Courier or Times New Roman fonts on 8 1/2" x 11" paper)

2. South Africa's government has currently proposed legislation that would begin affirmative action in that country. Would you urge them to do this based on your experience and the philosophical and theological principles of Roman Catholic social ethics learned in this course? (40 points--1-2 pages typed, double-spaced with 10 or 12 point Courier or Times New Roman fonts on 8 1/2" x 11" paper)

Please Note:

1) These essays will be graded for content, organization, strength and interest of argumentation, and English usage and style.

2) They are to be submitted by the time of the final examination (8:30-10:30 AM, Wednesday, May 13, 1998). Before the examination period they should be left under the door of Tower 614. During the examination period they should be brought to OM 114.
