RESOURCES
ANNOUNCEMENTS
- I have begun
preparing the
Spring Schedule.
Our tentative schedule is to open the station on May 2 and run until
June 7.
- The Shoals Lab will be asking
folks to fill out the Cornell Volunteer Agreement and to provide 1)
an emergency contact name and phone # of someone located OFF island
and; 2) any food or other allergies. Information and forms are
available at
http://www.sml.cornell.edu/sml_support_volunteercorps.html This
form will need to be filled out every two years.
- Please pay for your stay
after you leave the island.
All payments need to be made to the Shoals Marine Lab and should be sent
to:
Shoals Marine Lab
G-14 Stimson Hall
Cornell University
Ithaca, NY 14853
In the notes section of the check, please indicate bird banding station
fees.
- The boat list is on the web (http://www.sml.cornell.edu/sml_event.taf),
but you must let the island know when you plan to arrive. Please call
Pam Boutilier at SML's Portsmouth, NH office (603-430-5220) or email Pam at:
shoals-lab-east@cornell.edu to schedule boat reservations for your arrival
and departure. Please note that the boat schedule
is definitely tentative and subject to change - Wednesdays and weekends have
historically been the most predictable boats, but even those are subject to
change. Please make sure you check with Pam about your reservation 1-2 days
BEFORE your arrival, otherwise, if you have last minute concerns about
weather, etc. and need to reach SML staff on the DAY OF travel, and you can
not reach Pam, please call the island office: 603-964-9011.
- We will have three parking spaces at ISSCo for the spring. Please check
with the bander in charge to see whether one is available during your stay
on the island. Other parking options
remain the same (http://www.sml.cornell.edu/sml_gettingtosml.html has
details).
- In addition to the banding,
this year we will continue monitoring the area around the new wind turbine
for any bird mortality (the state of Maine is requiring this for the island
to put up the tower). The tower went up last summer and you can see
the turbine at
http://www.sml.cornell.edu/image/gallery/sml.turbine.jpg or at
http://airmap.unh.edu/data/data.html?site=AIRMAPIS). One of my
students is also looking at the behavior of birds around the turbine, so if
you are interested in helping collect some data for that project, let me
know.
- I have developed a listserve
for the station so that we can send out general announcements. Please let me know if you would
like to be added, or know of others who should be added.
