| "Shock and Thaw: War and Rapprochement in International Rivalries." Ph.D. dissertation. New Brunswick, N.J.: Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, 2006. |
| Abstract: My
dissertation explores the effect of war on international rivalries --
particularly the role of war in rivalry termination. Under certain
circumstances, wars can act as shocks that can dramatically affect the
strategic environment, the domestic political climate within rival states,
and the beliefs of government officials. In so doing, wars can open
windows for rapprochement. I investigate this phenomenon empirically
through a systematic analysis of the effect of war on interstate rivalries
during the past 200 years, with special attention to rivalries involving
Germany, the United States, and Argentina.
