Abstract: My dissertation explores the effect of war on international rivalries -- particularly the role of war in rivalry termination.  Under certain circumstances, wars can act as shocks that can dramatically affect the strategic environment, the domestic political climate within rival states, and the beliefs of government officials. In so doing, wars can open windows for rapprochement.  I investigate this phenomenon empirically through a systematic analysis of the effect of war on interstate rivalries during the past 200 years, with special attention to rivalries involving Germany, the United States, and Argentina.  committee:
