What is Unity?

¨ Unity as an educational organization:
At Canisius, Unity is a student run organization that implements club-wide and campus-wide programs and initiatives to educate the community on GLBTA issues with the goal of creating a more accepting atmosphere free of homophobic and discriminatory behavior.

¨ Unity as a support system:
On the campus level and within our own group, the mission of Unity is to provide students an atmosphere where they will feel safe discussing issues concerning gender and sexuality. Unity is a safe place where members can feel free being who they are and saying what they feel.

¨ Unity as a networking body:
At Canisius, Unity is one of over 110 clubs and organizations on campus, and will seek to co-sponsor events and network with other groups to increase name recognition and intra-campus support. On a larger scale, Unity looks to keep in contact with sister Jesuit schools' Gay-Straight Alliances, as well as local schools and organizations in the Western New York GLBT community, whom we seek to assist with manpower, fundraising, and creativity.

Mission Statement

Unity exists to provide an environment in which students feel safe and comfortable discussing issues concerning sexual orientation.  Unity tries to educate members of the Canisius community and recognizes that the quest for truth in education can only result from the willingness and allowance of individuals to speak from different points of view.  Unity shall strive to educate members of the community regarding Roman Catholic teachings on homosexuality, as well as encourage the College’s creed of “assume[ing] responsibility for the spiritual, intellectual, and physical growth of each person” and “recognize[ing] that the quest for truth in education can only result from the willingness and allowance of individuals to speak from differing points of view.”  Education about homosexuality and homophobia is not an endorsement of any particular lifestyle.  Commitment to create an atmosphere free of homophobic behavior in any form is fully consistent with Catholic education and the teachings of the Jesuits.
